Movie Review: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Combined Rating: 86% (S:86%; P:86%) - The five senses give us so much freedom to explore the world around us, yet they also create a reality grounded in physical sensations that can be quite limiting as well. Im not sure whether an ascetic lifestyle would ultimately be more satisfying than an indulgent one; however, I am certain that humanitys instinctual, genetic ancestry is a limitation on the ability to achieve enlightenment. With advances in artificial intelligence and genetic engineering, we can imagine a posthuman phase in which we are no longer bound to our fragile biology. In Perfume, indulgence leads to murder. When we lose ourselves in the physical world, we lose our ability to reflect on actions and to achieve higher levels of perception that would enrich ourselves in other profound ways. In a rather peculiar yet enchanting way, the film is a cautionary tale on sensuous indulgence.
