Movie Review: Eastern Promises
Combined Rating: 84% (S:84%; P:85%) - If David Cronenberg had directed The Godfather it would have looked a lot like Eastern Promises. The difference is merely in scale. Where Coppola worked his drama like a grand opera filling an entire hall, Cronenberg directs Eastern Promises like an opera performed by a bar band in some seedy dive. Everything is of a slightly lower order but works just as dramatically and often more shockingly. This is Oscar worthy work, especially from star Viggo Mortenson who has never been this good. Poker faced, charming without trying and vulnerable to a stunning degree; when it’s called for, Mortenson is the number one reason to shell out the 10 bucks to see Eastern Promises.
